Being well is a holistic process, encompassing all parts of ourselves and lives. If one part of self is significantly unwell, it will surely impact other realms.
When your emotions are regulated and you are well taken care of, you are less consumed by stressors. You can better handle what comes at you, and more capable of giving kindness to others. We overflow and pour out what our minds are filled with, whether that be stress and negativity, or love and patience. If you make taking care of yourself a priority, you are modeling to others around you, and also better equipped to be present for the people and things you care about. Self-care can be a ritual, something indulgent, a splurge or luxurious moment, but it can also be taking time while you have a free moment to pay your bills, or get your oil changed. Acts of self-care attend to one or more parts of ourselves/lives in a way that maintains us or reduces stress. Some have more therapeutic value than others, granted. Obviously most of us would prefer a coffee with a friend or to take a bubble bath over budgeting or a workout, but all of the above contribute to our overall functioning and wellness. One way to practice self-care is through mindfulness. You might create a list your favorite things: smells, colors, places, experiences, visuals….and build them into small moments throughout your week. A picture of your favorite scenery hanging in your work space, candle of your favorite smell, taking a moment to savor your coffee. These small rituals help us access moments of comfort and positivity in what can often otherwise be a chaotic life.
